Data-Driven vs Data-Enabled

In today’s world, being data-driven is the new norm. Organisations across the globe are making efforts to become data-driven, but what does it really mean, and why do some firms prefer to use data-enabled?

Being data-driven means making decisions based on data and evidence rather than intuition or personal experience.

Challenges which lead firms to want to be data-driven

Becoming a data-driven firm is an exciting and worthwhile endeavour that can benefit every firm. While some obstacles may need to be overcome, the rewards are worthwhile. Here are some of the common challenges faced by law firms when they set out to become data-driven:

1. Data Quality: Ensuring the quality of data is crucial to making informed decisions. Firms must ensure that data is complete, consistent, and accurate to avoid flawed decision-making.

2. Data Silos: Dealing with data silos can be a challenge, but it’s not insurmountable. Firms need to consolidate and analyse data stored in various systems or departments. Breaking down these silos can be a significant challenge, but it’s worth the effort.

3. Data Privacy and Security: Responsibility comes with data. Firms must ensure that they comply with regulations when collecting, storing, and using data. They must also protect it from cyber threats to maintain its integrity.

4. Analysing Data: Collecting data is an excellent starting point, but analysing it is where the magic happens. Firms need the right tools and expertise to analyse data effectively and extract actionable insights.

5. Cultural Change: Embracing a data-driven culture requires a shift in mindset. Firms need to encourage employees to use data to make decisions instead of relying on intuition or personal experience. While this can be challenging, it’s essential to drive success.

6. Return on Investment (ROI): Becoming data-driven requires an investment in technology, tools, and expertise. While it can be costly, the benefits are worth the investment in the long run.

Data-driven is more than partner decisions and strategy

As I said earlier in this article, being data-driven means making decisions based on data and evidence rather than intuition or personal experience. But all too often, I see objectives and KPIs around becoming a data-driven firm that focuses on helping partners make decisions and delivering the high-level themes in the firm’s strategy.

Being data-driven is about so much more than that.  Having better client conversations (the client experience) and identifying internal process efficiencies are both important.

Client behaviours and business performance

To excel in the business of law, data-driven also includes collecting, analysing, and interpreting data to gain insights into client behaviour, market trends, and other factors that affect business performance.  Being data-driven can also improve the client experience. By analysing data, Firms gain insights into client behaviour, preferences, and needs. Armed with this information, Firms can deliver better conversations and ultimately, better client experiences.

While internal process efficiencies are important, so is improving the client experience. Firms that balance both are the ones that will ultimately succeed in today’s data-driven world.

So being data-driven also means leveraging data to continually enhance or improve processes and optimise performance. By regularly reviewing data and pinpointing areas for improvement, firms can streamline operations, cut down expenses, and boost efficiency.

Being data-enabled is about the impact your firm’s people

But it’s not just about the company’s success. Being data-driven can also have a profound impact on employees. Using data to speed up, support, or streamline someone’s work is where the label ‘data enabled’ starts to make more sense.

A data-enabled culture can empower employees to access real-time data and insights to help them make informed decisions. This can save them the time and effort required to gather data manually, allowing them to focus on more strategic tasks.

It can also promote transparency and accountability, which can help foster a sense of trust and collaboration among the team. For example, when performance metrics are shared openly, employees can better understand how their work contributes to the firm’s success and identify improvement areas.

The biggest area of impact for a data-enabled culture is reducing the mental calories required to complete day-to-day work. This includes everything from making sure lawyers are only asked for a piece of information once to surfacing knowhow in context and out into enabling the use of AI.

The legal industry is greatly benefiting from the advancements made in artificial intelligence (AI) and data analytics. With an abundance of data available, AI-powered tools are revolutionising the way law firms analyse, interpret, and make informed decisions.

These tools are being used for legal research, document review, contract management, and e-discovery among others. Not only do they automate mundane tasks, but they also assist lawyers in saving time by streamlining their work and decision-making process.

Benefits of being data-enabled

A data-enabled culture can help reduce stress, promote work-life balance, and lead to happier and more fulfilled employees. Some more benefits of being a data-enabled firm are:

1. Better decision-making: By leveraging data, Firms can make informed decisions based on accurate and relevant information, leading to better business outcomes.

2. Improved efficiency: Data-driven decision-making can help Firms streamline their operations, eliminate redundancies, and reduce costs.

3. Competitive advantage: Firms that leverage data have a competitive edge over those that do not. They can use data to identify market trends, customer behaviour, and industry insights, giving them a leg up on the competition.

4. Enhanced customer experience: By analysing customer data, Firms can gain insights into their preferences, needs, and behaviours, enabling them to deliver personalized and relevant experiences.

5. Innovation: Data can fuel innovation, enabling Firms to identify new opportunities and develop new products and services that meet customer needs.

6. Risk mitigation: By monitoring and analysing data, Firms can identify potential risks and take proactive measures to mitigate them.

What’s stopping your firm from becoming data-enabled?

Embracing a data-driven approach within your firm can unlock a wealth of benefits that will help you to stay ahead of the competition, adapt to changes in the market and achieve long-term success. By collecting, analysing, and interpreting data, you can gain invaluable insights into customer behaviour, market trends, and other factors that impact your business performance. This, in turn, allows you to optimize your processes, empower your employees, and deliver exceptional experiences to your clients.

While it’s true that there may be some challenges along the way, these can be overcome with the right approach and investment. By taking a holistic view of your data and investing in the tools and resources needed to unlock its full potential, you can reap the rewards of becoming a data-driven organization.

I encourage you to embrace this exciting journey with enthusiasm and optimism! By being data-enabled, you can make better decisions, improve efficiency, drive innovation, enhance the customer experience, and mitigate risks.
