Iron Carrot offers a comprehensive training curriculum, designed to equip law firms with essential skills and knowledge in Data Governance.

The training covers key areas such as an Introduction to Data Governance, Data Governance Framework and Roadmap Training, Data Catalogue Training, Influencing and Persuading Skills Training, and an Introduction to Taxonomies Training.

Data Governance Curriculum

Part 1: Introduction to Data Governance

Audience: Members of the data governance and data management teams plus key stakeholders

Content: The session will introduce the core components of a Data Governance Framework, such as policies, procedures, roles, and data standards. Additionally, participants will learn practical strategies for implementing Data Governance within their firm, addressing best practices and common challenges.

The session covers the basics of Data Governance over four key areas:

Part 2: Data Governance Framework and Roadmap

Audience: The stakeholders tasked with creating the data governance Roadmap and Framework.

Content: This training builds on Part 1 and covers the basics of a Data Governance Framework, including Data Ownership, governance roles, and processes for ensuring data quality and security.

It addresses the creation of key documents and communication mechanisms for successful framework implementation. Participants are guided through a maturity assessment to identify the current “As-Is” state, pinpoint gaps, and prioritize activities to form a Data Governance Roadmap.

Additionally, it covers common challenges in roadmap implementation, strategies to overcome them, and best practices for measuring success.

Outcomes: Participants will gain a solid understanding of the core components of a Data Governance Framework, including roles, processes, and essential documentation. They will learn how to ensure data quality and security, develop effective communication strategies, and conduct maturity assessments.

Participants will also identify and prioritize gaps, create a Data Governance Roadmap, and address common implementation challenges with strategies for success measurement.

Duration: 4 hours

Part 3: Data Catalogue

Audience: The data governance or data management team members who are creating or working with the firm’s data catalogue.

Content: You will be guided through building a data catalogue by identifying key datasets, setting consistent standards, involving stakeholders, defining roles, and selecting appropriate tools. We’ll show you how to populate the catalogue with your most important data for a solid foundation.

We will explore ways to accelerate the process, such as prioritising quick wins, adopting an iterative approach, training teams, and embedding the data catalogue into everyday work to make it integral to your firm.

Outcomes: Participants will learn how to build a data catalogue by identifying key datasets, setting consistent standards, involving stakeholders, defining roles, and selecting appropriate tools.

They will understand how to populate the catalogue with essential data, prioritize quick wins, adopt an iterative approach, train teams, and integrate the data catalogue into everyday operations.

Part 4: Influencing and Persuading Skills

Audience: Data Governance Leads and anyone who needs to influence senior stakeholders.

Content: This training explores how to apply a range of practical approaches and tools to increase your influence and persuasion skills to help you get things done. ​This includes understanding stakeholders, breaking down barriers, building confidence, and personal control in challenging situations.

Outcomes: Participants will learn practical approaches and tools to enhance their influence and persuasion skills, enabling them to achieve their goals effectively. They will learn different influencing techniques to help raise their credibility with clients, peers, and others.

Participants will be empowered to navigate difficult conversations and scenarios more easily and effectively.

Taxonomy Curriculum

Introduction to Taxonomies

Audience: Members of the Data Governance or Knowledge Management team responsible for taxonomies as well as their key stakeholders (KMLs, Partners, Business Leaders)

Content: This training focuses on key knowledge and skills for establishing a unified operating vocabulary for the firm, ensuring it is centrally held and consistently used by all.

Using one of your firm’s taxonomies as a worked example, the training will cover developing a comprehensive taxonomy, including definitions, calculations, disambiguation, a hierarchy of terms, synonyms, and preferred terms.

Additionally, it will emphasize the importance of incorporating feedback from business service users and lawyers in constructing the vocabulary.

Outcomes: Participants will learn the basics of faceted taxonomies and why they are important for law firms. They will develop an understanding of cross-practice and cross-function taxonomy needs and the importance of building a taxonomy holistically.

Participants will also understand the importance of collaboration and communication in effective taxonomy management.

Soft Skills Curriculum

Project Management

Audience: Data Governance Leads and anyone who needs to understand the basics

Content: This training session provides a comprehensive overview of project management, starting with the fundamentals and key roles involved. Covering the essential stages of project management, including scoping, planning, and scheduling, this session features a short case study to illustrate practical applications.

We will also explore the project initiation process, the tools available for effective project management, and stakeholder management strategies.

Finally, the training will cover the dynamics of project teams and conclude with best practices for closing projects, fostering innovation, and continuous learning.

Outcomes: Participants will understand project management fundamentals, including roles, stages, scoping, planning, and scheduling. They will gain experience of practical applications through a case study.

Duration: 1.5 hours

Effective Delegation

Audience: Data Governance Leads and others who need to delegate work to people not in their own team

Content: This training session explains the concept of delegating, starting with its definition and exploring common barriers to effective delegation. It includes an exercise to understand the benefits of delegating and learn how to define clear boundaries. We will provide practical tips for successful delegation and include an exercise on best practices to reinforce the learning.

Outcomes: Participants will understand the importance and benefits of delegation, how to overcome barriers and set clear boundaries. They will be able to apply practical tips and best practices for successful delegation.

Duration: 1.5 hours

Intent, Impact, and Perception

Audience: Data Governance Leads and others who need to delegate work to people not in their own team.

Content: This training session will explain the difference between intent, impact, and perception. We will step through a series of exercises to help participants reflect on their communication style and how being helpful can have unintended consequences.

Outcomes: Participants will understand the concepts of intent, impact, and perception. They will be able to adjust their communication style to maximise impact and leave a positive perception.

Duration: 1.5 hour

Networking

Audience: Data Governance Leads and others who need to rapidly build a network in a law firm.

Content: This training session will explore the importance of networking and personal branding. Practical exercises will help participants craft an elevator pitch and learn how to manage their networks effectively.

Outcomes: Participants will have an elevator pitch and the tools to plan, build, and grow an effective network of stakeholders across the firm.
